Shipping containers used to transport temporary homes for Haitian earthquake victimsPost by Cameron Davidson on 29th July 2010 in Shipping
As a massive clear-up operation goes on to enable Haiti to recover from the January 2010 earthquake, the task of re-housing its victims is being made easier thanks to hundreds of standard 20-foot containers. They have been used to dispatch thousands of building kits made from steel, which can then be quickly and easily erected to provide much-needed shelter for homeless families. The international moving operation involves the containers being taken by sea from the factory in America where they were constructed. Then when they are offloaded at the Haitian capital, Port-au-Prince, they are taken directly by shipping companies to where they are to be erected. Trained Haitian workers then join up with aid teams to assemble the kits. Designed to withstand earthquakes, hurricanes and fires, each fully-completed kit measures 20 feet by 10 feet. There are plans to send 300 containers in total, and by the end of July nearly a quarter of that number had been forwarded.
