Young Greeks dream of international relocation and a new life abroadPost by Cameron Davidson on 31st August 2010 in Immigration Almost 74 per cent of college-educated, Greek youngsters
would consider international relocation if given the opportunity, according to
a new survey.
A total of 5,442 people aged between 22 and 35 were
questioned by Kapa Research for the survey. Just under half of those looking to
move to a new country said they would be looking for better job opportunities,
and 66 per cent said they’d go to get a better quality of life.
Greece has been left in severe financial difficulties as a
result of the global recession. A number of emergency measures have been taken
by the county’s authorities to try and improve Greece’s financial position, but
they have ended up affecting a number of Greek companies.
The world’s second-largest lottery systems provider,
Intralot, said on Tuesday (31) first half net profits had fallen by just under
40 per cent, mainly due to a levy placed on large firms in the country.
Similarly, Greece’s largest construction firm saw a 92 per cent fall in net
profits for the first half of the year thanks to a one-off tax.
There also appears to be a sense of alienation amongst the
young in Greece. Of those youngsters thinking of going abroad, perhaps of
moving to the United Kingdom, almost 72 percent said they felt no political
party was close to young voters in Greece.
