Gap year students warned to watch out for hidden hostel chargesPost by Cameron Davidson on 3rd September 2010 in Working abroad, Living abroad School leavers who are planning to take a year out before
university have been advised to watch out for unexpected costs when staying in
hostels abroad.
Research has found that travellers who have undergone
international relocation before
continuing to higher education often get caught out by hidden charges.
According to the Year Out Group, which represents a number of
UK-based gap year organisations, Wi-Fi, car parking and fresh towels were found
to be among the top things that travellers don’t expect to have to pay for when
staying in accommodation abroad.
As a result, people who are considering moving to New
Zealand or Australia to enjoy a gap year are being urged to make sure they know
exactly what deal they’re getting before booking hostels.
Alison Couper, global communications director at
Hotels.com, the firm behind the research, said: “All travellers can expect is that hotels
make it very clear from the outset which services and facilities they charge
guests extra for and by exactly how much.
“This is
where thoroughly carrying out your research before booking will stop any
surprises at check-out.”
