Government set to announce “smarter immigration controls”Post by Cameron Davidson on 6th September 2010 in Immigration, Working abroad, Living abroad Immigration minister Damian Green is due to deliver a speech
to the House of Commons this evening promising the introduction of “smarter”
controls on entry to Britain.
According to a report by The Press Association, in his address
the minister will admit that a straight cap on the number of economic migrants
moving to the United Kingdom will not be enough to deliver the level of
reductions promised by the coalition government.
Mr Green is expected to promise a review of immigration
rules to ensure the “brightest and best” applicants are given permission to
enter Britain in order to study and work.
International relocation figures published last month by the
Office of National Statistics revealed the number of people coming to live in
the UK in 2009, compared to those moving abroad, rose by 33,000 from the
previous year. Mr Green will tell the Commons: “We need smarter immigration
controls - controls which bear down on the numbers coming and welcome those we
really need here. We are looking at all routes and will need to set rules for
each of them that give us the immigrants we need.”
