Graduate tax would lead to mass student emigration, says CBI

Post by David Elliott on 7th September 2010 in Working abroad, Living abroad

Graduates from UK universities would leave the country in their tens of thousands in order to avoid a proposed new tax, according to a top business lobbying group.

According to a report by The Guardian, changes proposed by business secretary Vince Cable would see the government giving money directly to universities rather than to students to cover the cost of their tuition. Upon graduating, those who secure higher paid positions would then pay back more than graduates on a lesser wage.

The Confederation of British Industry (CBI) has said the government’s plans to introduce a new tax on learning would lead to graduates considering international relocation and moving abroad to avoid paying more for their degrees by taking a well-paid job in Britain.

Richard Lambert, director-general of the CBI, said if the proposals were adopted “UK students would have an incentive to work overseas to escape paying, especially when the top rate of tax is 50 per cent”.
