It’s on your marks for would-be South Australian emigrantsPost by Cameron Davidson on 24th September 2010 in Working abroad, Living abroad This coming Monday is a big day for anyone seriously considering moving to Australia, as one of the country’s major states is re-opening applications for its skilled visa sponsorship scheme. In anticipation of this, the state authorities in South Australia have updated the list of occupations for which they will accept migrants under the sponsorship programmes. The resumption of the application process has been long-awaited, and is accompanied by the re-introduction of an online visa application system. This has been taking expressions of interest from people interested in international relocation for an interim list, ahead of the full roll-out of a new state migration plan, or SMP. South Australia’s migration regulations were first drawn up in 1994, and they lay down the points system under which applications for emigration to the state are judged, based on the applicant’s occupation. Go Matilda, an Australian website which offers advice and news for anyone considering emigrating to the country, reports: “The SMPs are anxiously awaited by many intending migrants, as sponsorship under a SMP will be the only pathway for many who wish to migrate to Australia.” Go Matilda emphasises that, to be successful, applicants must meet all the requirements and criteria laid down by the SMP. South Australia covers an area of nearly 380,000 square miles, and the state capital is Adelaide. Its territory includes the vast majority of the country’s wine-growing regions.
