Huge growth boost for Asia-Pacific air freight firmsPost by David Elliott on 24th September 2010 in Shipping International shipping companies in the Asia-Pacific region
have reported a steep rise in the amount of cargo freight handled in August.
According to figures released by the Association of Asia
Pacific Airlines (AAPA), there was a 25 per cent year-on-year increase in the
amount of international air cargo traffic during August.
The region also saw an increase in the amount of passenger
traffic. Airlines carried 16.8 international passengers during the month which
represented a 12.4 per cent increase on the same period in 2009.
Andrew Herdman, director general of the AAPA, said: “Strong demand for air travel and air cargo
shipments in August provide further confirmation of the robustness of the
ongoing economic recovery across the Asia Pacific region.”
The latest monthly figures supported the views of those
predicting a strong post-recession recovery for the region’s freight companies.
The AAPA’s figures show a 32.1 per cent rise in the volume of international air
cargo for the first eight months of the year.
Herdman attributes the performance to strong volume growth,
disciplined capacity management and an improving mix of business.
