Australia the hot location among Irish emigrantsPost by Cameron Davidson on 30th December 2010 in Removals, Industry news, Immigration, Working abroad, Living abroad The number of international movers relocating from Ireland
to Australia has risen by 80 per cent in three years, and in 2010 reached more
than 24,300.
International relocation by its nationals has become a
controversial issue in Ireland, with Irish people taking advantage of one-year
working holiday visas to try out international moving, before committing to a
permanent change.
For example, while 1,530 people moved permanently from
Ireland to Australia in the 2008/9 financial year, more than 22,750 Irish
people took out the temporary visas, a rise of more than two-thirds in the past
three years.
Irish moving to Canada has risen even more sharply, with
more than 3,400 obtaining residency there in 2009/10, triple the number who
made the same move a decade earlier.
Emigration from Ireland to mainland Britain has also sharply
increased, going from just over 8,000 to more than 11,000 in just a year.
The Irish Economic and Social Research Institute expects
75,000 people to undertake international moving from Ireland in 2011, vastly
exceeding the 15,000 it anticipates arriving in the country.
