Abu Dhabi unveils new port facilitiesPost by Cameron Davidson on 30th January 2012 in Shipping A new port development in western Abu Dhabi will revitalise the region, and take pressure from the city's existing port hub, say its supporters. Announcing the completion of the joint development, the Abu Dhabi Ports Company and the city's Tourism Development and Investment Company (TDIC) said that the port would also help accelerate other major developments taking place in the capital of the United Arab Emirates. Said by Fortune magazine to be the richest city in the world, Abu Dhabi's existing port, close to the centre of the city, has nevertheless been constrained by capacity limitations. The new development, on Sir Bani Yas island, 170 miles from Abu Dhabi itself, will serve a city which, when originally planned, was designed for 600,000 inhabitants, but today has 50 per cent more than this. Acting CEO of TDIC, Sir James Pringle, told Gulfnews.com: "This dedicated construction and back-of-house operations hub will help to enable the smooth running of the transportation of goods between the island and the mainland, which in turn will assist us to continue to develop Sir Bani Yas Island into one of the emirate's leading tourism destinations."
