British countryside tops most-missed list among expatsPost by Ian MacLeod on 31st January 2012 in Living abroad The green and pleasant land for which Britain is rightly famed around the world is also the thing most expatriates from the country miss after moving away, according to a new survey. Nearly half – 46 per cent – of those questioned by Lloyds TSB International cited the British countryside as the feature they missed the most. A total of 85 per cent of respondents put it in the top three things they most hankered after. The British sense of humour was also missed by a large proportion of those questioned – 42 per cent – while 41 per cent also said they missed the country's pubs. In a finding which may reinforce certain stereotypes, the British sense of humour was most missed by expats living in Germany – 65 per cent of them – while 60 per cent of those now living in Canada and 54 per cent of movers to South Africa put it top of their 'missed lists'. The UK weather and its politics are the least-missed aspects of life, with both only registering a mention by five per cent of respondents. Overall, more than two-thirds (68 per cent) of those who took part said they were happier with their lives abroad than in the UK. "It speaks glowingly of our countryside that expats around the world miss it so much," said Nicholas Boys Smith, of Lloyds TSB International. “Many expats have an element of the adventurer about them, but they still long for certain aspects of British life that some people here might take for granted."
