New discount card makes SE Asia backpacking cheaperPost by Ian MacLeod on 1st February 2012 in Working abroad A new discount card aimed at backpackers trekking their way around south-east Asia has been introduced. The brainchild of a pair of seasoned backpackers, the card sets out to fill a gap in the market. With similar cards already available offering young people discounts in other popular backpacking destinations, such as Australia and New Zealand, its creators, Rachel Franklin and Sam Korn, felt a similar scheme would be useful for the growing number of people heading to the likes of Cambodia, Vietnam and Laos. Rachel said: "We found that both backpacker and business didn't have a cost-effective way of reaching one another. We returned home with the idea to build a website offering businesses a chance to promote themselves free to backpackers in return for the offer of discounts to card-holders who would otherwise not be aware of these great places." Marcus Sherifi of Gapyear.com said: "Although haggling for most things is part of daily life all over Asia, the international backpacker card gives discounts on what backpackers can't barter for ... saving up to 30 per cent on basics like food, accommodation and tours."
