It's a good time for Brits to retire to Europe says guidebook editor

Post by Cameron Davidson on 28th May 2012 in Living abroad

Now is a good time for Britons who have held dreams of retiring to some of Europe's sunnier parts, because the pound has become stronger against the euro.

So says an editor who works for one of the leading publishers of guidebooks to the continent.

Richard Way, who edits publications for The Overseas Guides Company, said: "While younger people across the UK and Europe are battling against the effects of unemployment, austerity measures and the difficulties in getting their foot on the housing ladder, expat retirees are relatively immune [from] the effects of the current economic problems.

"In fact, those that emigrated to the eurozone in the last three years and who draw a UK pension will be celebrating the fact that their monthly income in euros will have increased thanks to the recent strengthening of the pound."

He adds that those in the process of moving abroad will also see some benefits, as the pound is now worth more against the euro than at any time in the past two years.

For those who are buying a home overseas for cash, having sold their home in the UK, "this is a real bonus when buying in Mediterranean Europe, given the conditions that banks are having to apply to mortgages," Mr Way concluded. Now is a good time for Britons who have held dreams of retiring to some of Europe's sunnier parts, because the pound has become stronger against the euro.
